Although the revolt managed to force Spain to agree to reform, the Spanish government continued to oppress the populace. On February 23, 1895, José Martí, a famous author and poet, and General Máximo Gómez y Báez led a resumption of the Cuban revolution.

Americans often make the mistake of comparing other countries and their economies to the United States.  Both historic and present conditions make this comparision invalid.  Cuba is poor, but so is much of the rest of the world.  There are two questions of importance:  First, compared to countries of similar economic condition, how has Cuba faired with its revolution?  And, second and more importantly, why do is so much of the world as poor as Cuba?
