The Cuban republic was formally created on May 20, 1902, under the presidency of the
former postmaster general Tomás Estrada Palma, ending the military rule of the United States.  The Cuban constitution incorporated the provisions of the Platt Amendment, the U.S. legislation that established conditions for American intervention in Cuba, including a permanent United States military presence in Cuba.

During the occupation by the United States, U.S.corporate interests invested heavily in the Cuban economy, acquiring control of many of Cuba's resources, including the sugar-growing industry.
