Corporate control of the island led to recurring instances of fraud and corruption in Cuban politics.  Cuban dissatisfaction with the conservative-led government grew. 

In 1906, the Cubans rebelled against the government. The U.S. government sent troops to the island, which remained under U.S. control until 1909. 

Cubans rebelled again in 1912, and the United States invaded again, seizing control of the island.
